Heart patients benefit from magnesium

Magnesium is necessary for a host of bodily functions, including proper nervous system function, temperature regulation, detoxification, energy production and the formation of healthy bones and teeth. It is also vital for cardiovascular health. In past studies, magnesium has been shown to improve heart function in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD).

Researchers at the Heart Institute at the Sheba Medical Center in Israel wanted to further investigate the benefits of magnesium for CAD, specifically how it might affect patients’ quality of life.

In a multi-centre, double-blind study, 187 people, all with CAD, were given either 365 mg of magnesium or a placebo daily. The participants performed exercise tests and answered lifestyle questionnaires. After six months, the researchers found that magnesium supplementation had significantly increased the participants’ stamina, reduced exercise-induced chest pain and improved quality of life.

The researchers concluded that magnesium supplementation of 365 mg daily for at least six months could result in significant improvements for patients with CAD.
