PMS and painful periods affect nearly half of women of reproductive age—causing bloating, cramps, mood swings, fatigue and more. But a growing body of research points to a natural solution: curcumin, the active compound in turmeric.
Curcumin is known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and pain-relieving properties. Recent studies show it significantly reduces both the intensity and duration of period pain. It also improves mood by supporting serotonin and dopamine levels.
In a 2025 double-blind study of university students, women who took 500mg of curcumin from 7 days before to 3 days after menstruation (over 2 cycles) saw notable improvements in PMS symptoms and pain scores—better than those taking a placebo. No side effects were reported.
Take-Home:
For best results, take it daily starting a week before your period. As always, consult your healthcare provider before starting any new supplement.
